this painting is holy. lol.

Not sure how I feel about what I did here. In my head it made sense. I may later take another shot at this and make it a more seamless transformation of materials. hope you like it.

another fake frame.

This painting is kinda of a sibling of the last one I did. The last one being warm, this one is not cool. but it is done in green. In person the vibrancy of the yellows in the green pop more.

studio re arranging and such.

In this picture we have two paintings in various stages of not done. I spend a lot of time staring at this scenario. Part of painting is a lot of waiting for crap to dry.

My studio has got a serious leaking problem. So I rearranged and removed some stuff. It is better for my work flow. I love my windows. They make really nice light.

Straying from the concept.

This painting I did over the past two days. I am very pleased with the warmth and lightness of it. Also it appears to have a frame. It does not. I painted it to look that way. It strays quite a bit from my current concepts but sometimes it's good to just paint and not worry about what it means in the big picture of your body of work. a good painting is all i'm shooting for most the time anyway.

Prussian Blue and Burnt Umber Washes

^the painting

^detail shot.

This painting started as very thick primer. I then did washes of prussian and burnt umber. I used these two colors because together they make a nice black. And the washes needed to be dark so they would pick up the texture of the primer. Then I just did my usual detailing and toning around the two colors.

Sense. This Picture makes none.

These new drawings are so much fun. The subject matter being completely random, it allows for endless opportunities. They are classic "WTF"s. furthermore, coughing. I am completely open for suggestions of pop references and random images. Think of it as a string of nouns that are completely unrelated. each identifiable as its own. I will combine them all in a drawing if and as I see fit.

hoping to hear from you

jonathan

new drawings

john goodman, robots, hd, plants, fish, waves, pepper, christmas tree, field goal, birds, feather, and lots of chicken scratch all across two drawings. This random drawing is a lot of fun.

Quinacridone Crimson

Three Inch Brushstroke In Quinacridone Crimson.

Detail of the above painting.

This new painting is "three inch brushstroke in quinacridone crimson." I am very happy with it. Reds are tricky things to approach due to their tendency to turn pink when highlighting. Quinacridone crimson is one of my favorite colors to use. Yet I didn't know what to expect when I used it as subject matter. It turned out very well. I am very pleased with the warmth and tension of this painting. I also started using some new color tricks. I employed simultaneous contrast to really make the strokes pop up off the back ground. Using sap green as my initial dark tone, I was concerned that the red/green christmas effect would come through. It did not. My green reads black enough. and because your eye (nor mine) cannot see both red and green at the same time, the edges of the subject actually resonate visually a littlebit. I hope you enjoy it.

In other news, I just finished my submission for an exhibit at the Cocoran. Cross your fingers and hope I get in.
