The Front
This is The Front. A triptych. It started as a live painting at the N8 Glass Music and Art Studio's live art party. Took me almost an additional month to finish it out after the party. I'm including some shots of the individual pieces and some detail shots. The three pieces probably stretch about 6 ft from left to right.
Here is an extra shot before I added the black background to give you a sense of how it was made.
And here are some detail shots

Monsta Mash
I made this piece for the Nth Gallery's annual Halloween exhibit. It is acrylic on paper. I think we'll be doing a bunch more of these paintings on paper. Small and economic.

Back on the abstract track
Haven't made many paintings lately. I've been busy painting a haunted house and preparing to do a live mural at the Highball Halloween in Columbus Ohio.
But I did just finish this painting. "Remembering Magic Eye at the Mall" is the title. It was kinda nice to do a little abstract painting again since I've been doing the skulls series. I often found myself letting my eyes cross to see where it needed more of what color. It reminded me of looking at MagicEye posters when I was a kid.

Hello... I Ain't Lion
This is my newest painting. It is one of the biggest I've done. It stands 6 feet tall. It was a lot of work to get the level of detail I get in my smaller pieces in a piece this big. All and all, I'm happy with the out come and excited to show it this weekend at the Ohio Made Arts Festival. I'm setting up a booth there with all my paintings. Hopefully we'll see you there!

Maxilla

Trying my best to break out of my color palette. Yellow, purple, and green. New combo for me. This was a really interesting iPad sketch before it was a painting. The painting came out looking like a landscape of a forest at sunset/rise.
I titled it Maxilla because in the early stages of the composition parts of a skull were emerging.
On my way to having enough work for the show in June. Be there!

Straying from the concept.

This painting I did over the past two days. I am very pleased with the warmth and lightness of it. Also it appears to have a frame. It does not. I painted it to look that way. It strays quite a bit from my current concepts but sometimes it's good to just paint and not worry about what it means in the big picture of your body of work. a good painting is all i'm shooting for most the time anyway.

Prussian Blue and Burnt Umber Washes
This painting started as very thick primer. I then did washes of prussian and burnt umber. I used these two colors because together they make a nice black. And the washes needed to be dark so they would pick up the texture of the primer. Then I just did my usual detailing and toning around the two colors.

Quinacridone Crimson

Three Inch Brushstroke In Quinacridone Crimson.
This new painting is "three inch brushstroke in quinacridone crimson." I am very happy with it. Reds are tricky things to approach due to their tendency to turn pink when highlighting. Quinacridone crimson is one of my favorite colors to use. Yet I didn't know what to expect when I used it as subject matter. It turned out very well. I am very pleased with the warmth and tension of this painting. I also started using some new color tricks. I employed simultaneous contrast to really make the strokes pop up off the back ground. Using sap green as my initial dark tone, I was concerned that the red/green christmas effect would come through. It did not. My green reads black enough. and because your eye (nor mine) cannot see both red and green at the same time, the edges of the subject actually resonate visually a littlebit. I hope you enjoy it.
In other news, I just finished my submission for an exhibit at the Cocoran. Cross your fingers and hope I get in.

Three New Paintings
Very modern, Very formal, very exciting. These new works have been a great journey back to the basics. There will be A LOT more of these. Hope you enjoy them. I really find myself connecting with the "subject matter." If anything these are a way of better understanding the elements I have worked so comfortably over the years.

Currently Working.
So I'm beginning a new series. It is a desconstructive type of painting. Taking an element/technique out of painting and giving it its own rite of visual passage. For example, the first painting I have done began as four big splatters of paint placed within the composition in a manner that creates a pleasant visual tension/melody (however you look at it). Then and attacked the painting by outlining and toning the values of the splatters. This enables these splatters to really become something more than they are. They become forms expressing a variety of aesthetics that are intrinsic to the splatter. Spending a lot of time with a small brush working heavily with subtle and small details on such an expressive quick form allows me time to really take in everything that the splash represents in a painting. The painting turned out much lighter than anything I've ever done. And the sense of dramatism the splatter envokes rings thoroughly.
This is easily the best painting I hope I've ever done. Pictures soon. We will wait til I have plenty to share.

Some recent works

uhpdaits.
Sorry for the lack of everything. Tough times. I have a few new paintings that I am very happy with. Including a representational piece featuring a bowling pin. Then there are two more abstract pieces. I'll get pictures soon for show and tell.
In other news, the studio has undergone a few minor renovations. White walls. No carpet. Work will be for sale there all first fridays and sometimes on saturday afternoon. My studio mate Jeff Martin also sells work then. He is a full time artist working in ceramics and oils.
I guess that is all for now.
